Functional training targets, first and foremost, the movements (the biodynamics) of the body, and is as focused and beneficial as the training used for élite athletes.
This approach gets the small muscles that stabilise the body functioning in the way they are meant to, with the flow-on benefits of weight loss, aerobic fitness and muscle strength. Our day-to-day life de-trains these muscles (we use fewer than half of our 420 muscles) and, too often, as we train, we challenge only the larger muscles, like the quads. The smaller muscles must be challenged too, otherwise they ‘switch off’ and the body becomes unstable — something experienced frequently by those who are 60-plus.
At Positive Edge, we offer a 12-session functional training program during which you do the same exercises at each session at an increasing level of intensity. Why the same thing, again and again? It’s because our bodies become fatigued and muscles don’t gain strength if exercises are changed too often. This is why some people see few results for their hard work in the gym! As your body adapts to the changes brought on by the functional exercises, you will see it change at a rate of 2% per session, which will result in an impressive average of a 25% improvement in your fitness, strength and endurance following the program.
